First Steam Engines
After the Congress of Vienna which established the Kingdom of Poland ruled by the emperor Alexander I of Russia, a new monetary system was introduced. The Mint of Warsaw produced coins with the image of the new ruler which slowly replaced the Polish currency minted before the partitions and during the Napoleonic Wars. Therefore, in 1816 the minters produced as many as 7.6 million coins and a year later and in 1818 – 7.7 million coins in each year!
1817 was an extremely important year for the Mint of Warsaw. It is then that the construction of a modern building started. That building was supposed to fulfill the requirements of a quickly growing institution. Steam engines were imported for the company (they were the first steam engines in Warsaw!) as well as monetary machines. More or less at the same time banknotes printed in Jeziorna on a high-quality paper appeared.
