One of the Best Mints in the World

In 1991 – 1994 a new building of the mint at 56 Żelazna Street was built. It was opened on September 26th, 1994 by the then President of the Republic of Poland – Lech Wałęsa. Now the building holds the press of legal and collector’s coins, storehouses and offices.
The day of April 1st, 1994 turned out to be a breakthrough day – on this day the national company called the National Mint was transformed into a one-person company of the National Treasury called the National Mint S.A. and on February 6th, 1998 the Polish Securities and Exchange Commission floated the securities of the mint. Since April 7th, 1998 its shares have been listed at the Warsaw Stock Exchange.
At the end of May 2005 the Registry Court registered changes in the Articles of Association changing the name of Mennica Państwowa S.A. to Mennica Polska S.A.
What was going on in the company during that period of time? It started its activities in the area of electronic payments. Since December 2001 the company has been an operator of the City Card System in Warsaw. Since then it has served many Polish towns and cities in the area of public transport tickets (and in Warsaw it also receives charges for parking within the framework of the Warsaw City Card). At present the Mint of Poland is the only producer of legal and collector’s coins issued by the National Bank of Poland. In 2008 the production in this area was carried out in order to restore and replenish the coins.
In addition, the company produces legal and collector’s coins for foreign issuers and central banks, including the “royalty” system. In this area its biggest cooperators in 2008 were:
- the Dominican Republic and Armenia (legal coins);
- Armenia and Belarus (collector’s coins).

In the second area (the “royalty” programs) the Mint of Poland cooperated in 2008 with such issuers as: Belarus, Armenia, Andorra, Kazakhstan and Niue Island.
During the previous years the company has created and successfully introduced to the market a new product, i.e. Local Ducats. These are antique coins issued by local governments which, while being issued, play the role of a gift certificate. Since 2006 till August 2009 the company carried out over 160 such issues (the Gdańskie Rix-Dollars where issued in the greatest number – about 350,000 pieces).
A subsidiary company of the Mint of Poland, called Skarbiec Mennicy Polskiej has been operating in the area of Polish direct marketing since 2008. This subsidiary, using modern sales techniques and distribution channels, develops the collector’s market. After a few months of activity Skarbiec Mennicy Polskiej has won a few dozen thousand clients.

The Mint of Poland is also a significant entity at the national market of electronic payments. The distribution of electronic products and services is carried out through a network of points of sale equipped with modern terminals belonging to the company and working with software created by the company (the GOLD system). The products distributed through the sales network include: public transport tickets coded on the city cards (in 2008 they were used in Warsaw, Jaworzno, Suwałki, Radomsko and Lublin), pre-paid recharges of cell phones, in advance parking payments coded on the city cards and electronic one-time tickets (with the use of technology of an e-purse). The Mint of Poland is now one of the biggest and at the same time one of the most technologically developed mints in the world.
