The first release in this charming series features the Santa Maria, the largest of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus in his first voyage in 1492.

Columbus opened up the New World to further exploration and colonisation.

COLOURED REVERSE DESIGN
The coin’s reverse depicts a representation of the Golden Hind in full sail, set against a coloured globe map and the inscription GOLDEN HIND.  The design also incorporates The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
TUVALU LEGAL TENDER
Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, the coin’s obverse depicts the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2011 year-date and the monetary denomination.

The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of these coins.
NUMBERED CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY
The coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

The Santa Maria or Santa Maria de La Immaculada Concepcion, was the largest of three ships used by Columbus on his first voyage in 1492 . Columbus, under the patronage of Queen Isabella of Spain, was searching for a quicker trade route to the East Indies. Instead, he discovered the islands just off the coast of America, now known as the Bahamas. It was not until his third exploration that he landed on the mainland.

Although Columbus was not the first explorer to reach the Americas from Europe; the voyages of Columbus marked a milestone. Columbus opened up the New World to further exploration and colonisation.
