In Chinese culture, the horse is a token figure of strength. It is the seventh sign in the Chinese zodiac and a significant status symbol, often portrayed in figurines found buried with important figures in Chinese history. The character symbol for strength is "li". It seems that the horse has a natural association with this symbol, because its shape bears a likeness to a plough and plough share used as farming implement. The overall decorative design exemplifies some of the ornate art found in many typical Chinese pottery, embroideries, and sculptures.
