Grzegorz Ciechowski was an immensely gifted musician. He worked as a composer, singer, instrumentalist, music producer and leader of the rock band “Republika”, one of the most popular Polish rock groups in the mid-80s. He pursued a solo stage career under the pseudonym Obywatel G.C. [Citizen G.C.]. He was also involved in a number of other projects. Under the pseudonym Grzegorz z Ciechowa, he first mixed some folk motifs with rock music, paving the way for such bands as Brathanki and Golec uOrkiestra. Ciechowski carved his name deep in the history of Polish popular culture as an independent and prolific artist, succeeding in numerous best-selling records. Sharp industrial style of Republika’s songs were a synonym of a new quality in Polish music scene. Their lyrics often refer to the situations where an individual is confronted with a bureaucratic or oppressive system. It is no wonder that such records as „Biała flaga” [White Flag], „Kombinat” [Combine, enterprise] or „Mamona” [Pelf, money] remain so actual until today.

So far the Mint of Poland has featured coins devoted to the following Polish musicians: Czesław Niemen (2009), Krzysztof Komeda (2010), Jeremi Przybora and Jerzy Wasowski (2011), and Agnieszka Osiecka (2013).
