The numismat is a reference to the series of coins entitled A Gallery of Polish Kings and Dukes issued by the National Bank of Poland in 1979–2005.

In that period the mint struck coins dedicated to 23 kings and dukes. The medallic artists involved in their preparation were inspired by the drawings by Jan Matejko. However, not all the coins dedicated to the rulers drawn by Matejko were actually issued. Having consulted the numismatic circles, we would like to present the remaining portraits of Polish kings and dukes. The designs for the new coins have been prepared by the same artists who created the designs for the original series of coins. The coins are struck in accordance with the rules and diameters standard for the production of collector coins. The reverses are decorated with the busts and figures of the rulers, and the obverses – with the historic coats of arms and the name and title of a particular ruler in Latin. This is a reference to the original coins commemorating the times when Poland was ruled by kings and queens. The sixth figure to appear on a coin of the series is Alexander Jagiellon.
