Obverse:
The head of Melqart – a Phoenician divinity corresponding to the Greek Heracles – wearing a laurel wreath on his head

Reverse:
In the prow of a ship there is an eagle and behind it a palm leaf. An inscription in Greek says: TYRE HOLY AND UNTOUCHABLE SANCTUARY. The mace is a symbol of Melqart.


Thirty pieces of silver that Judas received from the Pharisees for betraying Christ corresponded to four drachmas of the Phoenician city of Tyre. The Shekel of Tyre was accepted for the payment of “Temple tax”.
